SCHWARTZ + PLU + SODA JERK + KRAFTWERK +
In the first of a pair of provocatively packed programs, we’re comparing and contrasting the video work of three crucial artistes (all women, by the way) whose work continues to expand our notion of cinema…and we’re setting their trifecta up with an awesome opening playlist, one which combs thru that history of A/V that set the stage for their super-mediated aesthetics…from Edison to Kraftwerk (coming to town in 11 days)! Lillian Schwartz stands out a as prolific practitioner of early video art, generating a brave wave of “experimental” analog work in the in the 60s. A generation later, we see the emergence of more figurative re-mixes, notably in the work of UK collage queen Vicki Bennett (PLU). AND a decade afiter that, the sister act Soda Jerk springs from Australia to the US to Europe, astonishing all who come near with their cool mastery of not only the current pop “archive”, but also the most canny ways of the “compilation narrative”. $12
