Monica’s work utilizes systems theory methodology and concepts derived from observations that demonstrate biological growth. Projects are grown into architectonic composites that generate hyper articulated forms and spatial fields.
The species work is grown through varied aggregation at multiple scales. The objective is the production of new systems and organizational methods that represent morphogenetic evolutionary traits.
The paintings explore fluctuations between disfiguration and figuration between layered fields/buddings and familiar beings. Similar to the species work, the paintings are assembled based on a logic of growth. The picture plane is amassed to create spatial amplification for the figures to oscillate and dialogue in tension with the viewer.
Monica has taught at the undergraduate and graduate college levels since 2000. She is currently the Art Director of Architecture + Design at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (SOTA) and developing an architecture and design high school curriculum started in 2015.
