Shistah Sinema: Sistah Sinema is a monthly event showcasing Queer Women of Color Cinema. Each showing will be followed by a moderated discussion section. Sistah Sinema was created to showcase the nuances of Queer Women of Color culture. Our goal is for the movies/films serve as a vehicle to foster honest dialogue on struggles and opportunities unique to Queer Women of Color. While discussion will focus on Queer Women of Color.
Program:
Sisters in the Life (23 mins) – First Love: A thirty-something black lesbian reflects on falling for her best friend in junior high. Set in the seventies and nineties, this is a delightful tale of love and friendship. Yvonne Welbon incorporates recreated flash-backs and real reminiscences, mixes media and styles, and throws in an original tune that embodies the essence of young love.
A Luv Tale (45 mins) – Directed by Sidra Smith, this audience favorite features MC Lyte, Tichina Arnold (Martin), and Gina Ravera (Showgirls). Photographer Taylor James (Gina Ravera of Soul Food, Kiss the Girls, and Showgirls) woos fashion magazine editor Candice over wine and candlelight, but too much stress and a rocky 12-year relationship with her boss/boyfriend are holding Candice back. Meanwhile, Taylor’s meddling best friend Aklia (played by rap star MC Lyte) tries to discourage her relationship with the older Montgomery.
