Dziga Vertov’s “The Man with the Movie Camera”

One of the foundational texts in the symphony-of-a-city genre, Dziga Vertov’s classic Soviet tone-poem THE MAN WITH THE MOVIE CAMERA is perhaps the greatest experiment in pure velocity in the history of the medium.  Unlike Eisenstein’s more dialectical (and therefore more digestible) works, this silent jewel has yet to yield all of its riches to potential filmmakers – particularly those in thrall to the mysteries of form itself.

THE MAN WITH THE MOVIE CAMERA will be presented on two consecutive nights with two new scores, performed live by Trash Fish Entertainment Corporation recording artists Dr. Prisoner: The Brain!  and The Zag Men – each of which will provide a different kind of support for this most rhythmic of feature films.

Dr. Prisoner: The Brain! made their performance debut at ATA last year.  Coupling atonal tape-loop soundscapes to drum-and-bass music, they produce a sound at once soothingly familiar and distressingly avant.  Dr. Prisoner: The Brain! are Possum

Carvidi (beats), Les Raww (guitar), and Dr. Astronaut Body (synthesizer).  They are currently recording their debut album, tentatively titled You Will Sniff The Panties!, for Trash Fish.
