Artists’ Television Access is a San Francisco-based, artist-run, non-profit organization that cultivates and promotes culturally-aware, underground media and experimental art. We provide an accessible screening venue and gallery for the presentation of programmed and guest-curated screenings, exhibitions, performances, workshops and events. We believe in fostering a supportive community for the exhibition of innovative art and the exchange of non-conformist ideas.

Sehnsucht: Slide Projections by China Langford

Sehnsucht is a German word with no equivalent English translation. It is roughly akin to nostalgia or longing, but in English these terms are related to the memory of something one has known, while sehnsucht has no such reference. Instead it describes a homesickness for an intangible home, a yearning for an unknown place, one which can last a lifetime. These slide projections are my effort to communicate, through photography, the feeling of sehnsucht, which is to me as palpable and universal as breath. The images are my rumination on the human desire to move closer to the imagined home, and the possibility that the unattainable nature of that home is what guides our course.
