"PUNK ROCK / HEAVY METAL KARAOKE" - The Movie
"Punk Rock / Heavy Metal Karaoke" is a documentary
that looks at the phenomenon started as a rock 'n' roll fantasy scenario
by punk godfathers Mike Watt, Mark Mothersbaugh (DEVO), Greg Hetson (Bad
Religion, Circle Jerks), and others. Allowing audience members to sign
up for a singing spot in front of this super group has made the show an
L.A. (and sometimes touring) must see. The film spends much of its time
chronicling one of Punk Rock Karaoke's offshoots- a band of obscure musicians
and music nerds in New York who have lived out as much of a fantasy as
their followers/singers by adding heavy metal to the song list and weekly
packing Lower East Side rock clubs for the past three years. The profiles
and interviews with all the characters that make up this wish-fulfillment
scene are almost as hilarious as their performances, the majority of which
substitute heart for honed skill.
